JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
The Norfolk Tides honored current and former U.S. Service members in the Hampton Roads community during the 21st annual Armed Forces Appreciation Night at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia, May 14, 2016.
The appreciation night kicked off the team's series of games honoring Service members throughout the summer season.
"We are lucky and fortunate to have such a strong military presence here in the Hampton Roads area and we appreciate everything they do for this country," said John Muszkewycz, Norfolk Tides Director of Group Sales.
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Rosemary Miranda, 633rd Civil Engineering Squadron commander support staff and Langley Air Force Base Airmen Committed to Excellence secretary, along with U.S Army Spc. Amy Gonzalez, Fort Eustis' Transportation Management Coordinator and Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers president, represented Joint Base Langley-Eustis by throwing out the first pitch.
"It was extremely humbling and honoring to be able to represent the Air Force at such a meaningful event," said Miranda. "I sincerely hope that I was able to bring pride and honor to all the men and women who wear and have worn the same uniform as me."
Army Col. Dave Hardy, chief of the Joint Training plans and operations division Joint Staff J7, Col. Nate Hunsinger, director of the Training Operations Management Activity, Training and Doctrine Command, and Air Force Col. Caroline M. Miller, 633rd Air Base Wing commander, served as the senior service representatives.
Outside the stadium, each service provided a static display for game guests to enjoy. The Air Force display featured a vehicle and equipment from the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron's Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight, including the EOD robot. Fans were also able to view displays and information from the different services throughout the stadium.
"I think the local community likes to see the military out and about and involved, it creates a positive connection between the Air Force and local community," said Miranda. I think a lot of the local community are retired military so it gives them a sense of pride when they see the active duty being involved.
As part of events to celebrate 100 years of Air Power over Hampton Roads, the Norfolk Tides will honor Joint Base Langley-Eustis with its inaugural Air Force Appreciation Night at Harbor Park, July 23.
