JBLE Safety presents Independence Day safety tips

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 230 people go to the emergency room each day with firework-related injuries on days in conjunction with Independence Day.

Along with firework hazards, common injuries around the holiday weekend include swimming, camping, hiking and travel mishaps.

"We see a lot of mishaps during holiday weekends when people are out and about more," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Victor Jones, 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office occupational safety technician. "One thing we like to reiterate to Airmen is our Check 3 GPS initiative which means to check to make sure you have the proper gear, a plan and the right skills for whatever activity you're engaging in."

Service members are reminded that they should fill out an AF Form 4392-Predeparture Safety Briefing if they are under the age of 26 and going outside the local area. Additionally, if Service members are involved in any type of mishap, they should notify their supervisor immediately, so an AF Form 978-Supervisor Mishap Report can be completed and submitted to the Safety Office.

More tips from the Safety Office to help Service members and their families stay safe and enjoy their holiday weekend include:

Grilling and fireworks:
- Keep heat sources away from flammable items and buildings. Base housing residents are required to place grills at least 10 feet from walls or railings.
- Don't use fireworks close to children or pets. Never let children hold fireworks.
- Always be sure to have a fire extinguisher or water nearby to avoid flare-ups from any unexpended pyrotechnics.
Swimming and beach activities:
- Make sure to have the appropriate level of skill required for the activity such as swimming, skiing or other water activities.
- Always swim at a beach with a lifeguard on duty.
- Apply sunblock with at least SPF 15 or higher, depending on individual sensitivity to UVA and UVB rays.

Camping and hiking:
- Ensure enough food and water is packed for the amount of travel or camping that will occur.
- Service members should ensure someone in their chain of command knows where they are going in case of an emergency.

Traveling:
- Make sure travelers get enough sleep before traveling, and rest throughout their travel period.
- Have a plan in case of congested roads or vehicle accidents.
- Ensure the vehicle is prepared for the route to include tires with the appropriate tread and fluids filled.

"Whether it is driving, kayaking, skydiving, Check 3 GPS is a tool that you can use to ensure that you are checking yourself and making sure whatever activities you're going to be involved in, you're going to be doing them safely," said Jones. "We understand it's a great time to enjoy time with family and friends and we want to make sure everyone is safe."
