History helps shape future leaders

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Members of Langley Club 5/6 began hosting a leadership seminar based around the TV miniseries "Band of Brothers" on July 7, 2016 here.

The miniseries, released in 2001, is based on the non-fiction novel written by historian Stephen E. Ambrose. The series follows the U.S. Army "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

As seminar attendees watch each episode, they observe and later discuss the actions of those portrayed as they make their way through World War II.

"We go into a discussion about the specific leadership traits and characteristics of the different people portrayed in the episode," said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kristopher Parrish, Langley Club 5/6 professional development chairman. "We will get to see the characters as they grow, make mistakes and do what they can to survive as leaders and Soldiers."

The Langley Professional Development Center led a seminar on episode one prior to Langley Club 5/6 taking over the sessions with episode two. Seminars will be hosted every few weeks and Langley Club 5/6 will release the dates and times before each session.

All active duty members are welcome to attend the seminars and encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible in order to build on the skills learned as the miniseries progresses.

"It's a good way of mirroring our leadership styles with what was done or what should have been done in the past and portrayed in the episodes," said Parrish. "I think this is a really innovative way to bring about leadership discussions because taking an entertaining historical television series and applying it to how we are as leaders in the Air Force now.
