JBLE-Eustis Environmental Restoration 5-Year Review

By Joint Base-Langley-Eustis

The U.S. Air Force Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Eustis (JBLE-Eustis), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, is initiating the fifth Five-Year Review (FYR) of environmental remedies implemented at Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) sites at JBLE-Eustis.

The fifth FYR at JBLE-Eustis will evaluate the remedies at six operable units (OUs), including OU1 - Bailey Creek (CS030), OU2 - Brown's Lake (SI029), OU4 - Eustis Lake (CS036), OU9 – Landfill 7/Area 3300 (LF004), OU10 - Landfill 1/Officer's Club (LF001), and OU12 - Skeet Range Wetland (SR038). A FYR is required because hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants remain at these OUs above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. The purpose of the FYR is to evaluate the remedies implemented at these OUs in order to determine whether each remedy is and will continue to be protective of human health and the environment.

The FYR process includes reviewing historical documents and monitoring data, as well as conducting site inspections and interviews. The methods, findings, and conclusions of the review will be documented in a FYR Report. The FYR Report will also identify issues found during the review, if any, and propose recommendations to address identified issues.

The fifth FYR Report is scheduled for completion by December 16, 2027, and will be available for public review on the USAF Administrative Record at: https://ar.cce.af.mil/.
