LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
The recent flag-waving and cake cutting here looked a lot like an Independance Day celebration -- and it was, but in honor of Australian counterparts visiting the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing as part of an orientation program.
Col. Paul Nelson, 480th ISR Wing commander, and the men and women of the 497th ISR Group observed "Australia Day" with three of their brethen from the Royal Australian Air Force. Colonel Nelson kicked off the celebration with a warm welcome to the Australian military.
"I appreciate everyone being here today to celebrate this day that is very special to our Australian partners," said Colonel Nelson. "This is a great opportunity to recognize the great relationship between our two countries."
Australia Day is the country's national holiday celebrated each Jan. 26. It commemorates the arrival of the first fleet of 11 ships from Great Britain at Sydney Cove in 1788, establishing the first European colony in Australia.
"Australia Day is similar to your Independence Day," said Corporal Craig Hollindale, RAAF. "On this day we celebrate everything that is great about Australia."
Just like our July Fourth celebrations, outdoor concerts, community barbecues, sports competitions, festivals and fireworks usual for Australia Day, which falls during the country's summer period.
"Australia Day is about sunshine, playing cricket and spending time with family," said Sergeant Robert Moroney, RAAF.
