LANGLEY AFB, VA. –
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and the 1st Medical Group is targeting one of the causes.
A lipid clinic designed to monitor cholesterol in active-duty members is open 2-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the main lobby of the 1st Fighter Wing Hospital.
"Active-duty patients currently being treated for high cholesterol are referred to the venue by their primary care manager in order to help them reach their individual cholesterol goals and monitor their treatment plans," said Maj. Brian Logue, 1st Medical Support Squadron Clinical Pharmacy chief.
"During the appointment, lab results are reviewed, the risk of heart disease in the next 10 years is evaluated and prescription medications are provided if needed," Major Logue said.
The clinic is a shared medical appointment - not a class, said Major Logue.
The format is designed to free up other appointments, while still providing top quality care to cholesterol patients.
"Langley has been able to operate similar services in the hospital to treat seasonal allergies in the spring as well as colds and influenza in the winter months," he explained.
People over the age of 20 should have their cholesterol checked every five years, and even the fittest person can be susceptible to cholesterol problems.
"Overweight, unfit people do not necessarily have high cholesterol levels, and physically fit individuals do not necessarily have low cholesterol levels," Major Logue explained. "If someone is living a healthy lifestyle, maximizing their exercise routine and eating a great diet but still has high cholesterol, prescription medication can lower their cholesterol and reduce their risk of dying from heart disease."
