LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Langley wrapped up its six-week Combined Federal Campaign Nov. 27, but not before the 1st Fighter Wing raised the standards above the rest of the region in support of nationwide charities.
Being the highest contributor in the region, Langley donated more than $467,000. The wing and tenant units raised $210, 916 this year, which was not only an increase from the $188,166 raised last year, but exceeded this year's goal by seven percent. Air Combat Command contributed over $257 thousand towards the campaign.
Langley falls under the Virginia Peninsula region which consists of Fort Monroe, Fort Eustis, Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, U.S. Postal Service, Social Security Administration, FBI and IRS, which all contribute to the CFC.
Every year, the United Way, which organizes the CFC, suggested a two-percent increase for the overall goal for this year. Langley matched their request and raised it to a five-percent increase, said Capt. Darnell Roper, a 1st FW CFC project officer.
"It was very exciting to see everyone get out and donate this year," said Captain Roper. "It's an amazing way to show support for the less fortunate."
Because the drive took place between Columbus Day and Thanksgiving Day, it could have lowered the amount of donations, but that didn't stop Langley.
"We were worried about the holidays hindering the donations, but Langley pulled through and donated the highest amount during those times," said Captain Roper.
Captain Roper said he expected nothing less than to exceed our goals again this year, and the volunteers who gave their time and effort played a crucial role in the success of the campaign this year.
Every year, the United Way handpicks thousands of charities to be a part of the CFC. These organizations are chosen based on how much money is actually given to the charity in need compared to how much it costs to run the charity, which assures a legitimate charity.
"Whether the money goes to the homeless, people needing medical attention, abused and battered children and spouses, or any other good cause you can think of, the CFC will support it and make sure your donation counts," Captain Roper said.
Captain Roper said he was thankful for the phenomenal response from volunteers and contributors who helped make the CFC for 2006 a huge success.
"We look forward to raising the standard in 2007 and hope to see the same success," he said.
