2007 tax deadline approaches

By Charlie Cooper 1st Fighter Wing Legal Office

The 2007 tax deadline is right around the corner, and this year, taxpayers will have until April 17 to file their 2006 tax returns and pay any taxes due.

People who are unable to meet the April filing deadline can file a Form 4868, Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, by April 17. This form will extend the deadline to Oct. 15, but will not extend the time to pay any taxes due. Interest will accrue on any amount not paid by the April deadline, including a late payment penalty.

Volunteers recommend that taxpayers who have completed their returns but are unable to pay their taxes should not file extensions, but rather file the return on time and pay as much as possible, and the Internal Revenue Service will a bill or notice for the balance due. A second option is to complete Form and make installment payments; however, people should be aware interest will accrue on any amount not paid by the April deadline.

The tax center is located inside the Langley Community Center at 62 Walnut Avenue, building 247, and is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the center at 764-7054 or 764-7055.
