Pilot names released in Red Flag collision

An F-15C and F-16C were involved in a midair collision over the Pacific Alaska Range Complex at approximately 11:05 a.m. June 11. Both aircraft were participating in a training mission.

Maj. Jason W. Costello, an F-15 pilot assigned to Langley Air Force Base, Va., safely ejected from his aircraft before it crashed in a rural area approximately 89 miles east by northeast of Eielson.

Maj. Brett R. Paola, assigned to the 64th Aggressor Squadron, Nellis AFB, Nev., was able to safely return the damaged F-16 back to Eielson.

Both pilots were evaluated at the Eielson clinic and have been released. Neither pilot sustained any injuries from the incident.

Emergency response teams have secured the crash site and a board of officers is investigating the incident.

The Red Flag-Alaska 07-2 exercise resumed June 13.
