LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
In 1916, the polio epidemic paralyzed 27,000 people and killed 6,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
During the 1940s, there were more than 200,000 cases of whooping cough, a disease which can cause seizures, brain damage, pneumonia and death.
Thanks to immunizations, diseases which have previously afflicted thousands of Americans are no longer of grave concern.
August is National Immunization Month, and a time for military members and their families to make sure they're up-to-date on their immunizations. Parents must have copies of children's immunization records, as children cannot receive vaccinations without current shot records.
