LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Nearly 200 children processed through the deployment line during the sixth annual Operation Hero here Nov. 10.
The program is for children ages 5 to 12 whose military mom or dad is deployed or going to deploy. It helps educate the children and ease the transition as their parents prepare to deploy.
"I had a blast," said Alison Day after she handled some of the firefighting equipment at the event. Alison is the daughter of Capt. Peter Day, Joint Forces Command.
"We think this is really important to understand what your parents do to execute the mission," Col. Jeffrey Harrigian, 1st Fighter Wing vice commander, said to the children.
The participants had an up-close look at an F-15C, were briefed by 1st Medical Group personnel on self-aid and buddy care, witnessed a fire department demonstration, and experienced chemical warfare protective gear training. They also saw a demonstration by an explosive ordnance disposal robot.
"The children are very knowledgeable," said Tech. Sgt. Kelly Butterfuss, 1st Medical Group. "I love teaching them about what I do."
About 900 Langley members are currently deployed in support of the Global War on Terror in various locations around the world.
