LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
President Bush signed H.R. 5140, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, Feb. 13, which will provide rebates to 128 million American households with the intent of re-circulating money into the economy.
A minimum of $300 per person and $600 per couple will be available to those with at least $3,000 of earned income. This relief will be available to everyone with adjusted gross income less than $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. The amount of such rebates is reduced by 5 percent of the amount that exceeds an adjusted gross income of $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for married taxpayers filing joint returns.
Retirees, senior citizens and veterans with no income may still file and receive this rebate if they receive over $3,000 in Social Security or veterans' benefits. These rebates shall not be considered income for purposes of determining eligibility for federal and federally-assisted state benefit programs.
Taxpayers can qualify for the rebates by filing a 2007 tax return with a valid Social Security number. Therefore, people with individual taxpayer identification numbers are not eligible.
Payment of comparable tax rebates will be made to residents of the Commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.
