Langley introduces kids to the deployment process with Operation Hero

By Staff Sgt. Misty D. Slater 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Langley members' children will get the chance to experience the deployment process with the Operation Hero event scheduled for Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the static display hangar.

Organized by the Langley Airman and Family Readiness Center, the event is limited to 200 children and registration ends July 25.

The event is for children ages 5 to 12 whose military parents are deployed or going to deploy. It helps educate the children and ease the transition as their parents prepare to deploy.

At last year's event the participants had an up-close look at an F-15C, learned about self-aid and buddy care, witnessed a fire department demonstration, and experienced chemical warfare protective gear training. They also saw a demonstration by an explosive ordnance disposal robot.

The kids went through a series of deployment stations which included being issued orders, getting their picture taken for an ID card and receiving dog tags.

To register for the event, e-mail the child's full name, current age, photo and parent's full name and telephone number to afrc.tap@langely.af.mil.
