Fishing hole must close

By Lorie Vega 1st Force Support Squadron

Sadly an era of fishing from the King Street pier will come to an end Sept. 2, as the supporting timber pilings are deteriorated beyond repair and are well past their life expectancy.

After review by the 1st Fighter Wing Safety Office and the 1st Civil Engineer Squadron, it was determined that the pier was no longer structurally safe for use and the $1.5 million repair cost is not within the 1st FW budget at this time.

The pier, which has been in existence since 1933, has been battered by storms and time and has finally reached the end of its useful life. While this popular fishing site will soon be unavailable, Langley also offers an off-base fishing and recreational area, Bethel Park.

While the damaged Bethel Park pier is being replaced, fishermen are encouraged to utilize the off-shore fishing area that is also available at the park. Guests can also take advantage of paddleboat and boat rentals for a small fee.
