LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Construction crews broke ground Oct. 15 on the first phase of a $311 million privatized housing project that will eventually give Langley Airmen 1,431 new and renovated housing units.
This first phase of construction in Bethel Manor will demolish 182 units and rebuild 143. Base-wide 1,104 units will be demolished and 1,052 will be rebuilt. Due to their historic designation, 120 units on the main base will be renovated.
"The men and women of Langley AFB deserve these new and upgraded homes," said Brenda Cook, 1st Civil Engineer Squadron deputy base civil engineer. "The project owner and our own housing management office have effectively teamed together to ensure our Airmen have the best housing and housing management in the Air Force."
Although the entire development project will not be completed until September 2014, families can expect to begin moving into new units beginning as early as August 2009, according to project managers.
The Air Force's housing privatization effort has been implemented at more than 42 locations and has yielded over 32,711 housing units. The ability to partner with the private sector development community has helped the Air Force provide quality homes for Airmen and their families.
