LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Although the armament flight is the smallest flight in EMS, their job is no less important.
The flight inspects equipment that is installed on both the F-15 and F-22. Each piece of equipment carries and fires missiles or ammunition.
"We're one of the few shops that work on equipment from both aircraft; our guys are qualified on both," said Master Sgt. Kelvin Benge, combat armament support team chief for the 27th Aircraft Maintenance Unit. "Most armament shops only deal with one aircraft, if there are two types they normally have them split up."
Last fiscal year the flight had 44 inspections on the M61A1 F-15 Gatling gun and M61A2 F-22 Gatling gun systems with zero quality assurance discrepancies. They also won the second quarter's team excellence award for the squadron.
"The guys that we have working, they know what they're doing and they are dedicated to it," said Master Sgt. Kelvin Benge. "We're always ahead of the game on everything. The armament shop always takes the extra step to make sure we are good to go."
