Hectic schedules needn't hinder healthy choices

Airmen on the go may not always have the time to eat right, so Langley's Health and Wellness Center offers the class "How to Make a Meal using only a Microwave Bag," which teaches participants an easy and quick way to create healthy meals.

The class is taught and run by Sheila Bailey, HAWC registered dietician, and Tammara Mullins, Langley Commissary secretary.  It is held in the break room at the commissary and goes over directions and tips on cooking with microwave bags.

"Making meals in the microwave is an easy way for Airmen to prepare something quick before they go to work," said Ms. Mullins, who added there are also a variety of meal possibilities that can be made, including shrimp and rice, steamed veggies and even beef stroganoff.

Ms. Bailey also teaches tips on food portion control and healthier food options. She stresses the importance of checking food nutrition labels and figuring out how to choose food products that will keep you fuller, longer.

"These meals are beneficial because they're quick and easy to make for those who are busy with work and family," said Ms. Bailey, "Microwaving your food in a bag also retains nutrients better than steaming would."

During the class, participants made omelets using their newly acquired knowledge. In assembly line fashion they added different meats, cheeses and vegetables. Ms. Bailey chose an omelet recipe to disprove any skepticism people may have about the bag being able to properly cook anything, including an egg.

"I was surprised at how delicious the food was," said Tech. Sgt. Andrea Smith, a supply technician from the 735th Supply Chain Management Group, "I'm definitely going to use the recipes and tips at home."

Sergeant Smith is an active-duty single mother and is always on the go. She decided to sign up for the class to learn how to cook healthy meals for her children.

"People should take advantage of this class," Sergeant Smith said, "It really helped me learn there are things I can do while on the run or with a busy schedule."

Ms. Bailey and Ms. Mullins began teaching microwave bag cooking in September and participation has doubled in size since. The next class is Dec. 11 at 8 a.m. To sign up or for more information, call the HAWC at 764-6321 or 764-8141.
