How to Save A Life

By Tech. Sgt April Wickes 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Approximately 700 Airmen attended the Save A Life Tour Nov. 14.

The tour delivered a powerful message to the young Airmen at Langley, according to Lt. Col. Chris Levy, 1st Fighter Wing chief of safety.

"We continue to stress the dangers of drinking and driving and welcomed another version of the message," said Colonel Levy. "Even if it (the tour) saved just one life, it was worth it."

Participants who attended the Save A Life Tour filled out a post-event survey. Here are some of the results:

- More than 95 percent of Airmen surveyed think drinking alcohol and driving is dangerous.

- More than 92 percent would take keys from a friend who wanted to drive after drinking.

As a result of the Save A Life Tour:

- More than 85 percent of Airmen said they are less likely to drink and drive in the future.

- More than 95 percent said they are less likely to ride with a driver who has been drinking.

"It is never acceptable to drive after drinking; never," said Colonel Levy. "There are multiple systems in place to prevent this from happening, but it always comes down to an individual decision. The decision must be made right now, not when the Airman is in the situation and can get caught-up in peer pressure, emotions, or alcohol-induced imperviousness."

If an Airman has been drinking and needs a ride home, they can call Airmen Against Drunk Driving at 764-AADD, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Airmen can also call their supervisor, first sergeant, commander, a taxi service, or a trusted friend if they need a ride home, according to Tech. Sgt. Linda Cuciniello 1st FW ground safety office B flight supervisor.
