Intramural bowling base championship

By Tim Spencer

At the intramural bowling base championship Dec. 17, the question was whether GCIC A would be the first team in more than six years to be both the regular season champions and the base champions. They would have to get past the defending base champion 1 CS A, who was the 16th place seed this year after winning a one game roll-off the previous week to secure the final spot in the championship.

1 CS A proved they would not go down without a fight to defend the title.

In the second round, the 14th seed ACC A7 A bowled against the number 6 seed 710 COS. In first game, ACC A7 won by 9 pins. 710 COS was determined not to let the close loss deter them from their quest to win the championship the first year in the league. But they fell short and lost the second game by 11 pins to lose the match by only 20 pins.

The semi-final matches was the closest of the night. 1 AMXS A, who was the 5th seeded team, was against the 16th seed of 1 CS A. Again 1 CS pulled out all the stops and won the two game match by 10 pins. In the other semi-final match it was 7th seed 735 SCMG verses the 14th seed ACC A7 A. They tied the first game with a 786 score. This game was the only one that 735 SCMG bowled below 800. To show that game was not what they were capable of they came back the second game and bowled an 896. Not to be outdone, ACC A7 rolled the high of 908 to defeat 735 SCMG by 12 pins.

1 AMXS A and 735 SCMG bowled for third and 4th place. 735 SCMG took third place by winning 1725 to 1592. 735 SCMG would end the night with the highest pin count of any team in the tournament.

The championship match pitted the 14th seed of ACC A7 A versus 16th seed of 1 CS A. 1 CS won the tournament last year from the 14th seed. Would ACC A7 returned the favor and defeat them from that same seed? After the first game 1 CS, led by Bill Denham who rolled a 219 game, was in front by 67 pins. ACC A7 mounted a charge in the middle of the second game. 1 CS saw that they would not go down with out a fight and posted another score of 815 versus their opponent's 810 to capture the title for a second straight year. The winning team was composed of Sherri Strifler, Jon Sutherland, Nichole Canton, Cecil Bells, Christopher Foltz, Andrea Denham and Bill Denham. ACC A7 A team was comprised of Kathy Wojciechowski, DT Thomas, Kelly Manahl and Leo Manahl.
