A safe year for Langley

By Tech. Sgt April Wickes 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Langley Airmen made safe choices in calendar year 2008. Those choices led to zero fatal mishaps.

"What it boiled down to was each individual making smart choices and being a good Wingman," said J.R. Dunn, 1st Fighter Wing ground safety manager. "Airmen and supervisors did an outstanding job. Supervisors made sure their Airmen were involved in the programs we offered, and the Airmen were looking out for each other and doing the right thing."

The safety office held multiple events throughout the year to remind Airmen to focus on safety on and off duty.

Stay Alive From Education offered more than 600 Airmen a look at what it's like to be a victim through trauma scene reenactments. Airmen experienced what it took to save the lives of youths who made poor choices when it came to drinking, using drugs and not wearing seat belts.

About 700 Langley Airmen attended the Save A Life Tour and witnessed the dangers of drinking and driving through presentations, videos and drinking and driving simulators.

"We continue to stress the dangers of drinking and driving and welcomed another version of the message," said Lt. Col. Chris Levy, 1 FW chief of safety. "Even if it (the tour) saved just one life, it was a tremendous success."

Airmen Against Drunk Driving also played a role in drinking and driving prevention, by providing 159 safe rides home, preventing Airmen from driving under the influence.

The Langley community also experienced three months with zero DUIs in calendar year 2008.

"The key is consistency in those safe choices," said Mr. Dunn. "If you can do it for one month you can do it for two or three months consecutively and even a whole year or multiple years."
