Tax Center opens for preparation

The 1st Fighter Wing Tax Team has established a tax center for military members and their families.

The tax center offers preparation and electronic filing of federal tax returns, advice and counseling on tax issues, and the distribution of various federal tax forms. No state tax services will be provided but the tax center will have information about how to file state tax returns.

The tax center will be open Feb. 9 through April 15, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Individuals filing form 1040EZ may use walk-in hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; individuals filing other forms can call 764-7054 or 764-7055 for an appointment. Available federal tax forms may be picked up at any time.

The tax center is located on the third floor of 56 Willow Street, Building 142, in the Professional Development Center. People who cannot climb stairs should call to make arrangements to meet a preparer in a different location.

The following items are needed to file taxes:

-Social Security Cards for all family members

- A copy of last year's tax return

- All W-2s received for the 2008 tax year

- All 1098s and 1099s received for the 2008 tax year

- Child care provider's tax identification number or social security number and the total amount paid in child care for the year 2008

- If you are filing electronically, a voided check or statement from the bank with routing number and account information on it

- A power of attorney if you are filing a joint return and one party is unable to make the appointment. The power of attorney allows you to sign the tax return on his or her behalf

Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS; however, the tax center is limited to basic individual income tax assistance. Volunteers are not licensed tax professionals and a complex tax return may require paid professional attention. The staff cannot provide advice or assistance to anyone owning rental property, day traders or a private business with the exception of Langley Air Force Base licensed family child care providers.

The 1st Fighter Wing Tax Team needs volunteers to serve as administrative support for the tax center. Active-duty volunteers must provide an appointment letter with name, rank, office symbol, and duty phone. Supervisor, first sergeant's, or commander's permission is required to volunteer. Retirees or military spouses can contact the tax center at 764-7054 or 764-7055.
