First set of new homes will soon be available

By Airman 1st Class Jarrod Chavana 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

The first 20 new houses at The Landings at Langley are scheduled to open later this summer.

The new houses are part of the 1,051 homes and ancillary facilities being built at Langley by 2014 and are the result of the recent privatization of Langley's family housing.

The first residents will be field grade officers.

The 20 two-story houses feature 2,300 square feet, three or four bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, and a two car garage.

Additionally, a 7,200 square foot Welcome Center with an exercise room, entertainment and meeting area, playgrounds, and lighted recreational facilities will be built, said Bill Johnson an Air Force contract project manager. There will also be a swimming pool.

The houses on Langley were originally constructed in the 1920s and 30s, while most of the houses at Bethel Manor, now known as The Landings at Langley, were built in the 1960s.

"The purpose of the privatized housing initiative is to accelerate the revitalization of housing to contemporary standards," said Richard Moynihan, the capital asset management element chief. "We believe partnering with the private sector and tapping their expertise in building communities will create a family friendly atmosphere of varied architectural styles with lots of amenities."

The new houses will be single family and duplexes that are 20 to 30 percent larger than existing units, according to Mr. Johnson. These homes will not look exactly the same but have 32 different floor plans.

"These homes are not your father's military housing," said Mr. Johnson. "It will be as nice as most any development in York County."

Field grade officers wishing to live in one of the new homes should contact the housing management office or Welcome Center at the Landings at Langley (formally Bethel Manor) and fill out an application. For more information, call 865-1188 or 865-1330.
