Formation run road rules

By Airman 1st Class Sylvia Olson 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

With warmer weather there is an increase of formation runs and Lt. Col. William Brooks, 1st Security Forces Squadron commander, reminds drivers to follow the rules of the road.

"Large formations running on public roadways can increase the potential for safety hazards," said Colonel Brooks. "We need to review the rules of the road."

According to Langley Air Force Base Instruction 31-204, Langley Air Force Base Traffic Code, when passing a troop formation, the speed limit is ten miles per hour. In addition to this rule, a right-of-way should be given to the formation when feasible.

Colonel Brooks acknowledges the importance of the Air Force's continued emphasis on physical fitness and the value that formation runs have for units to keep fit and demonstrate unit cohesion. He applauds Langley for meeting the challenge and invites all units to join the 1 SFS during their formation runs.

"By following these rules we can avoid the potential for hazards and ensure every unit on Langley has an opportunity to demonstrate their teamwork and pride," said Colonel Brooks.
