Mosquito aerial spraying scheduled for local area

Mosquito aerial spraying at Langley and parts of the surrounding area is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., July 7-9.

Spraying areas include Langley, Bethel Manor housing, Hampton, Fort Eustis, York County, Poquoson, Newport News, Fort Monroe, Craney Island, the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and parts of Portsmouth.

A C-130 Hercules will be flying as low as 150 feet over the peninsula to train aircrew and spray Dibrom Concentrate. After spraying, about 90 percent of adult mosquitoes should be killed. The reduction in mosquito populations may last up to two weeks depending on the size of the area sprayed and how favorable conditions are for new mosquito to hatch.

Beekeepers are asked to keep their bees covered during the spraying operations in their particular area.

Anyone with known allergic reactions is advised to stay indoors.

The mosquito hotline number, (757) 225-5591, will be available July 7-9 for up-to-date spraying information.
