Langley exceeds AFAF campaign goal

By Capt. Heath Horton 1st Logistics Readiness Squadron

During the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Air Force members past and present showed their true mettle.

From February to June 2009, Air Force members demonstrated their unwavering support of the Air Force Assistance Fund and the four affiliate charities it represents: The Air Force Aid Society, The Air Force Villages, The Air Force Enlisted Villages, and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation.

Langley's goal for the 2009 campaign was $157,387. For the first time in four years, the base met and exceeded its goal by 116 percent, raising $183,254.

Over the years, these charities have stood by Airmen in times of need, from the time they enter service throughout their retirement years. This year, you, our fellow Airmen, have stood by those charities once again.

The all-time Air Force record for donations, set in 2005, was $7.37 million. This year shattered that record by more than $105,000, bringing our total donations to more than $7.48 million. This is 129.9 percent of the $5.76 million goal for 2009.

Our Air Force family once again has upheld the AFAF great tradition of taking care of our own and demonstrating Airmen have a true "Commitment to Caring."
