LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
The 1st Equipment Maintenance Squadron softball team defeated the 1st Security Forces Squadron by a score of 6-1 in the Langley Intramural Softball League championship game Aug. 18.
The esprit de corps of each unit was on display in the camaraderie between players, the unique jerseys worn on the field and the clever nicknames for the clubs; for example, the 1st EMS team called themselves the Bulldogs.
The championship game started with excitement as both teams exhibited defensive prowess, keeping it scoreless for the first two- and-a- half innings. In the bottom of the third inning, the 1st EMS broke through with a two-run-single and an RBI double to take a three run lead.
The Bulldogs scored again in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 4-0 lead. Despite eight hits, 1st SFS managed to score just once, narrowly avoiding the shutout.
"It was a great game, watching 1st EMS do their best," said Master Sgt. Wildlando Handy, 1st EMS support section chief and softball team coach. "I'm very proud of them."
The Bulldogs also had eight hits for four RBIs, two walks and no batters down on strikes.
"We lost to 1st SFS in the regular season but through practical base running and effective defense, we managed to secure the title," said Master Sgt. Handy.
"It's a good feeling watching our team work together, even though we lost to 1st EMS," said Tech. Sgt. Edward Locus, 1st SFS flight sergeant. "No worries though, we'll get them back during flag football season."
After the game, both teams met for handshakes on the field, and were photographed with their respective trophies. Although 1st SFS lost, the team's spirits were still energized and high.
