Operation Warmheart overcomes cold weather

By Airman 1st Class Sylvia Olson 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

The cold wind and rain did not stop 80 Operation Warmheart volunteers from filling 438 food bags for Airmen in need Nov. 23.

Operation Warmheart is a First Sergeants' Association outreach program designed to support Airmen and their families during the holiday season.

To raise program funds, volunteers were stationed at the commissary taking food or monetary donations. The FSA also conducted a 5K fun run Oct. 30, raising $3,000 for the operation.

"Operation Warmheart is about the holiday spirit and caring for our own," said Master Sgt. Michael Dyer, 1st Security Forces Squadron first sergeant.

Inside a large tent away from the elements, volunteers filled eco-friendly reusable bags donated by the commissary to the brim with boxes of macaroni, corn bread, stuffing, a turkey and dessert - all the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner.

After filling up the bags, volunteers delivered them to different squadrons.

"Special thanks goes out to the First Sergeants' Association and those who volunteered," said Col. Wade Tolliver, 1st Fighter Wing vice commander. "Thanks to everyone's efforts, we are able to help those in need this Thanksgiving."
