633d ABW HQ puts a place to a name

By Airman 1st Class Sylvia Olson 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

The morning gloom and rain gave way to reveal sunshine at the 633d Air Base Wing headquarters ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 9.

The 633d ABW HQ not only represents the joining of Fort Eustis and Langley, but a big change in the way Langley runs as a whole, said 2nd Lt. Melissa Jumper, 1st Civil Engineer Squadron Simplified Acquisition of Base Engineer Requirements chief.

"Everything about the facility is joint base in nature, and honors Langley's historic heritage whilst meeting the modern needs of its future occupants, Col. Gene Kirkland, 633d ABW commander, and support personnel," said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Ullmann, 1st CES commander.

With a $740,000 price tag, the funding financed renovations and installation of the geothermal system, parking lot and landscaping, said Lieutenant Jumper. Funding also allowed for room occupancy sensors and unique external architectural details, such as the chimney.

The geothermal system is a Langley first and part of the Air Force's effort to conserve energy and protect the environment. It is 35 percent more efficient than regular heating and cooling systems, said Colonel Ullmann. In addition, 1st CES installed front windows to recreate the look of service station garage doors. Inside, walls are adorned with photographs of Langley and Fort Eustis heritage.

"In the 1940s the building served its customers by fueling car tanks," said Col. Matt Molloy, installation commander. "This is what it continues to do. It's a support station that serves the mission; the Airmen, Soldiers and our families."
