LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
The Combat Targeting and Intelligence Group basketball squad outgunned the 497th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group team, 46-22, in an intramural contest on the Shellbank Fitness Center courts Feb. 4.
From the beginning, CTIG exploited the 497 ISRG's inaccurate shooting and poor ball control, complementing power forward Drew Colen's proficiency from the three-point line.
Colen, who wore an "All Air Force" jersey, paired his sharp shooting with the rebound mastery of CTIG's 6-foot-6 guard John Griffiths. Griffiths towered over everyone on the court, able to swipe rebounds and get the ball down the court to a waiting Colen.
Griffiths served as a virtual brick wall, covering two 497 ISRG players at a time using his stature and long reach.
The tandem led the charge for CTIG, creating chaos for exasperated 497 ISRG players trying to close a widening point gap.
While the game was short on fouls, the 497th's scoring deficit was apparent even at halftime, trailing CTIG, 33-12.
CTIG forward Kendra Norris took the court in the second half, outpacing defenders and passing with precision into dense coverage inside the paint. CTIG's speedy scoring and blanket defense was too overwhelming for the 497 ISRG to mount a comeback.
Referees ended the game with two minutes left on the clock, calling the mercy rule due to the disparity in the score.
