HAMPTON, Va. –
Fifteen Langley members braved the cold and wind to walk circles around Hampton University's Armstrong Stadium track March 27, as part of the American Cancer Society-sponsored Relay for Life Awareness Walk.
Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.
"For me, it's a great way to show support for the members of my family who have been stricken with cancer," said Master Sgt. Stephen Clingerman, who participates in Relay for Life events yearly. Airman 1st Class Megan Whitmore echoed Clingerman's sentiment, "My grandma died of cancer, so raising money for cancer research is very important to me."
Each team member held personal reasons for wanting to participate - some lost family members to cancer, while first-time Relay for Life supporters wanted to share in the cause. Whatever the reason, the team ensured someone consistently treaded the track throughout the event.
"Hampton University supplied a plethora of entertainment to keep walkers motivated throughout the event," said Staff Sgt. Heidi Davis, 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs and team participant. "With live music and flag football games in the center of the stadium, I round the track without noticing how much time had passed."
At the end of the day, the 36th Intelligence Squadron team (consisting of fourteen 36 IS Airmen and a 633 ABW/PA Airman) raised $540 for cancer research or 13 percent of the $4,300 total collected for the five-hour event, and overall, raised the fourth largest amount among 180 participators.
The next Relay for Life event is scheduled for June 4. For more information, visit www.relayforlife.org.
