LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
Airmen can now enjoy free wireless internet access at the Eagle Room Dining Facility, recently installed by the 633d Force Support Squadron.
The service is available to dorm residents during meal hours. Airmen may remain in the dining facility to browse the web up to one hour after normal serving times.
Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Jurgella, 1st Fighter Wing command chief, noticed other Air Force dining facilities offering Wi-Fi to patrons. Upon activation of the 633d Air Base Wing, Jurgella handed the idea off to Chief Master Sgt. Charles Anderson, 633 ABW command chief, to bring it to life.
633 FSS sustainment services coordinated the technical aspects of the project with the information technology office and the 633d Communications Squadron to get the DFAC online.
The service operates on an initial download speed of 5 megabytes per second and upload speed of 1 megabyte per second, said Jerome White, 633 FSS chief of information technology. The squadron will test these speeds and leave room for adjustment as customer interest increases.
Logging on is simple -- no passkey is required to access the network. However, Airmen are advised not to illegally download copyrighted content or visit inappropriate web sites on the network. Headphones are required when using sound-based media, including music, movies and voice chat.
The Wi-Fi service is one of several 633 FSS on-base projects for Airmen, including a $30,000 upgrade to the community center's video gaming lounge, said White.
