Virginia International Tattoo seeks Airmen to volunteer

By Maj. Kathryn Bienfang Air Combat Command Public Affairs

The 2010 Virginia International Tattoo is reaching out to the local military community asking volunteers to support the 2010 Virginia International Tattoo April 30, May 1 and May 2.

Volunteers will assist in preparing for the even starting April 23. Roxanne Sweeney, VIT Operations Manager, said that volunteers generally support either the operations/logistics team (or the production team. Operations/logistics supports international and local transportation, customs/shipping, rations and quarters and education outreach events. Production volunteers will support design and fabrication of theatrical staging, sound and lighting, stage management and support of performing groups.

"No experience is required but we will gladly incorporate the skills of the volunteers as appropriate," Sweeney said. "For example, those with an expertise in engineering will be able to apply their skills by fabricating set pieces and those with a background in the medical field can apply their skills by assisting performers with basic first aid needs."

Volunteers get meal vouchers good at Downtown Norfolk restaurants for meals that fall during volunteers periods, a Virginia International Tattoo Cast and Crew T-shirt, an invitation to the Cast and Crew Party and complimentary tickets to a performance for their family.

Military members who want to volunteer in any capacity must not be in uniform while doing so. Their rank and service distinction cannot be placed in any printed program.

"The reason for this is so that it doesn't appear that the DoD is the orchestrator of the event," said Capt Jennifer Sanchez, Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, 633 Air Base Wing. Volunteers must be either off duty or in leave status. Permissive TDY cannot be used for this event.

To volunteer, contact Roxanne Sweeney at 605-3066.
