By Michele Davis LOSC scholarship chair

The Langley Officer's Spouses Club is pleased to announce the 2009-2010 Scholarship winners. This year, the LOSC had $10,000 to distribute to deserving spouses and students who are pursuing a college degree. After receiving 39 scholarship applications, the committee chose 11 deserving applicants. The winners were judged on academics, community activities, leadership positions, awards and honors, as well as a one-page essay.

The top scholarship award is being presented to Christian Burne. He is a senior at Peninsula Catholic High School and will receive a $1,250 scholarship. Christian will attend the University of Scranton. With dedication and hard work, Christian earned a 4.7 GPA. He is the captain of the varsity baseball team, a peer mentor for incoming students, president of Students Against Destructive Decisions and has more than 120 volunteer hours over the last four years.

The Diane O'Malley scholarship award is being presented to Mandy Bowers. Mandy will receive a $1,250 scholarship. The award honors the memory of O' Malley, who was the Honorary President of the LOSC. O'Malley believed greatly in not only in academic success but also in volunteering and how it benefits communities. This award has been given annually as part of the scholarship process since before 1990. Mandy is a Jamestown High School senior who has earned a 4.34 GPA and will attend Dartmouth College. She has more than 450 hours of community service, from volunteering at the humane society to working as an interpreter at the Wythe House in Colonial Williamsburg to much, much more.
