Change of command

By Zack Shelby, Editor 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 93rd Signal Brigade changed commanders during a ceremony July 30 at Seay Plaza.
Col. Todd Isaacson took over for Col. Jim Garrison, who commanded the unit for about two years.
First to make remarks was Brig. Gen. Jennifer L. Napper, 7th Signal Command commanding general. She said Garrison's tenure in command was marked by many outstanding achievements, including standing up the brigade.
"You built a strong team," Napper said. "Colonel Garrison is also well known as a commander who takes care of his people and goes the extra mile to build morale among his team."
Napper said she sometimes worried whether the social events Garrison conducted would interfere with operations.
"But, they never did," Napper said. "What came out of that was a stronger team. His special efforts brought together the brigade as a cohesive team."
She then wanted to make a moment to recognize the other half of the command team, Garrison's wife, Sarita, who Napper said was a military spouse who generously donated her time and talents.
"Your sacrifices are very much appreciated," Napper said. "I know this has been a very demanding time for you as well as Stephanie and Whitney (Garrison's children). Thank you all for serving this country."
She said Garrison's team has excelled in large part because he inspired them.
"As you turn over the brigade to Colonel Isaacson, I know you will take fond memories of the men and women of the 93rd, and I also hope you will take away pride in having done a very tough job, very well," Napper said of Garrison. She then turned her attentions to the new guy.
"Colonel Isaacson - Todd, I welcome you and Leeann to the 7th Signal Command. The Army has chosen very well in selecting you to lead the 93rd Signal Brigade, and I am confident you will excel in command and lead the men and women of the 93rd to even greater success. Welcome to the family and to the team."
Next to make remarks was Garrison, who welcomed everyone to the unit's first change of command.
"Being a part of the 93rd Signal Brigade for the last two years has been the highlight of my 25 years," Garrison said. "It has been the most professionally and personally rewarding experience of my career. This mission, at this time in our nation's history, with the people represented in this formation, has made this experience truly amazing and in honor to be a part of."
There was many people Garrison said he wanted to thank, starting with what he said in his very biased opinion was the greatest Army family - his wife, Sarita, and daughters Stephanie and Whitney.
"I know the last two years have been tough when we chose to execute this assignment in a manner that imposed a great deal of separation and hardships, and I thank you for your love, support and understanding," Garrison said.
He then addressed his parents.
"Mom, Dad, it truly means a lot for you to be here," Garrison said. "Without you, all the great experiences I have been able to have, would not be possible. I love you both." He also thanked various forms of leadership and co-workers, civilian and military that he worked with and for over the last two years.
"Todd and Leann - once again, welcome to 93rd Signal Brigade," Garrison said. "You've just begun an amazing experience. I wish you the best as you lead this special group of Americans into the future."
The final speaker was Isaacson, who said everyone's attendance made a day that was already special for his family, even more special.
He then thanked Napper for her kind words and leadership to the brigade and command and wished her greener pastures in her next assignment. He also thanked the 93rd Sig. Bde., Fort Eustis and his neighborhood for the warm welcome his family received.
"If that's any sense of how our next two years is going to go, we're very excited," Isaacson said. "I'm very honored to join the ranks of the 93d Signal Brigade today.
He added that he was looking forward to the road ahead, rolling up the sleeves, and building on the successes and achievements of the previous command team over the last 24 months.
"I appreciate his friendship," Isaacson said of Garrison. "I've gotten to know Jim Garrison over the last year and certainly over the last weeks very closely. He's a dedicated American who gives everything he's got to his command. Those achievements are the result of his hard work, and I congratulate him. You have my admiration, and I give you and your family my very best."
He said he hoped everyone stayed for the reception to thank everyone for their service, reconnect with old friends and forge new friendships.
"From my family to yours, thank you very much for being here," Isaacson said.
