LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
A ground breaking ceremony was held Aug. 9 for a $ 7.2 million state of the art, large vehicle inspection station near the Armistead Gate.
The LVIS will contain a 752 square foot vehicle inspection facility, a 5,218 square foot truck inspection canopy and a roadway containing more than 69,000 square feet of asphalt.
"The flexibility of the new design and its ability to meet the DOD anti-terrorism force protection standards make it better suited to accommodate random anti-terrorism measures for sustained operations," said Col. Donald Kirkland, the 633rd Air Base Wing commander. "This is apparent in the road design, the traffic geometry, as well as the overall site design."
The construction of this new gate will allow a separation between the visitor traffic and commercial traffic entering the LaSalle gate. The buildings will also be environmentally friendly.
"This project is designed to be both green and energy efficient," said Lt. Col. Jeff Ullmann, 633rd Civil Engineer commander. "It meets the design and construction standards of the United States Green Building Council's leadership in energy and environmental design program. This will display Langley's and the Air Forces commitment to have sustainable designs and construction practices."
This new facility will clear the way for military and civilian personnel to enter Langley easier and more efficiently. The new gate is scheduled to be ready and operating by the end of May 2012.
