Langley food service warriors compete for Hennessy award

Team Langley Airmen are dishing out their best culinary creations and superb service in the hunt for the 2011 Air Combat Command John L. Hennessy Trophy. The team will be evaluated for the honor Oct. 28 and 29.

The Hennessy Trophy is presented to Air Force installations, in single and multiple facility categories, for having the best food service programs in the Air Force.

Langley is among the finalists competing for the ACC-level award, which is scheduled to take place at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., last year's ACC winner. The winner of each command's award will compete for the Air Force-level Hennessy Trophy.

The Hennessy Trophy is named in honor of the late John L. Hennessy, one of the nation's most capable and respected hotel and restaurant executives, who, as part of the former Atomic Energy Commission, encouraged a competition among military food service facilities to inspire better management and command support of food service.

While Langley took home ACC honors two years ago, the Eagle Room dining facility has not won the Air Force-wide honor since 1992, while still part of Tactical Air Command. The 633d Force Support Squadron is looking to change that this year.

"We've earned 13 command-level wins since 1990," said Tony Skwirut, 633 FSS food services manager. "This is our chance to write history under the new 633 FSS."

According to Chief Master Sgt. Raymond Magby, 633 FSS food services superintendent, the key to winning the prestigious title is simply doing what the facility does best: providing world-class food and service to Langley's Airmen.

"The biggest part is attitude," he said. "We can have all the programs right, all our 'i's dotted and 't's crossed, but if the attitude isn't right, you won't succeed."
