WWII-era munitions found at Eustis construction site

By Lyna Tucker, Assistant Editor 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

At approximately 8:14 a.m. Monday, three unexploded ordnances were found during excavation at the Harrison Causeway project construction site behind Bldg. 2022, Harrison Rd. on Fort Eustis. The rounds were uncovered when an excavating machine was digging at the site. The munitions were approximately 5 feet in length and Olive Drab green in color. According to Amber Michel, Restoration Program Manager, the UXOs appeared to be World War II-era 300-pound General Purpose munitions.

Fort Eustis Fire and Emergency Services and Provost Marshall Office were immediately dispatched to the area where patrol units set up traffic control points, and evacuated and cordoned the area from vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Officials from the 633d Air Base Wing Command Post and the Fort Eustis Directorate of Public Works Environmental and Natural Resources Division were notified.

The Yorktown Naval Weapons Station Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded and arrived to the site at approximately 9:45 a.m.

A similar munition was discovered on the same site Jan. 19.

"The last one was wholly inert, but we can't assume the same about every one," Michel said.

The EOD team determined that the ordnances were non-hazardous and removed them from the site and transported them to Yorktown Naval Weapons Station for disposition.
