ATSC opens new facility

The U.S. Army Training Support Center celebrated the grand opening of a new annex to the Training and Doctrine Command Capability Manager-Army Training Information Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at Bldg. 3308, Wilson Avenue, Fort Eustis.

The 5,000-square foot building is an addition to the unit's headquarters in Bldg. 3306, providing room for approximately 30 contract support personnel to be located onsite rather than offsite, saving the government money and consolidating the workforce.

In a brief speech, TCM-ATIC Director Larry Matthews welcomed attendees and expressed his appreciation for the project completion.

"What you see is a physical manifestation of what will become the Army's Training Information System where we can have a workforce that can do the right things for the Army at the right time," Mr. Matthews said.

According to ATSC Commander Col. Sharon Baker, the newly expanded site will not only provide a centralized location for ATIC personnel to work from, but provide a better platform for information systems Army-wide.

"With this, we can collaborate more closely to help with ATIS' mission and support the Army ATIS user community," she said.

The new facility is also slated to be an operational Thin Client test bed.

Thin Client is a user interface system in which programs, utilities and data are located on a remote off-site server -- a "cloud." Thin Client interfaces -- or cloud computing -- allow users to access applications from a shared pool of computing resources quickly with little interaction with service providers.

The TCM-ATIC is the center of the Army's training information systems, providing for the management and delivery of Army training capabilities worldwide.
