JBLE Tax Center keeps money in clients’ pockets

By Airman 1st Class Jason J. Brown 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

On any given day in the Joint Base Langley-Eustis Tax Center, dedicated tax preparers navigate the complex web of files, forms and figures to ensure servicemembers, dependents and retirees receive the biggest refund possible.

The Tax Center employs more than 30 Airmen, Soldiers and civilian volunteers at Langley and Fort Eustis locations to provide tax services in accordance with the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Capt. Eric Morley, JBLE Tax Center officer in charge, said the Tax Centers have processed more than 750 returns, which rendered more than $1 million in refunds, since opening Feb. 1. The free preparation service has saved clients more than $100,000 in filing fees, an average of $200 per customer, than if they has used and off-base tax filing service.

According to Senior Airman Rona Hooker, JBLE Tax Center administrative specialist, the in-house Tax Centers offer elements of security through familiarity.

"So many customers feel comfortable being helped by another Airman or Soldier because they can relate to them," Airman Hooker said. "There's a rapport between military members and families that makes the experience enjoyable to both the preparer and the customer. It's a great example of the 'wingman concept' in action."

The Tax Center's benefits are not limited to its clients as each volunteer receives training and certification through the IRS.

"Filing taxes is something everyone has to do at some point, and our volunteers have at least the fundamentals of tax preparation," said Captain Morley.

Tax Center staff members are assigned to various units across JBLE in a variety of career fields. Working at the center provides them an opportunity to see a different side of the military, promoting interaction with the public and honing professional skills.

"I love helping people -- seeing them so happy with their refund and the customer service brightens my day," said Airman 1st Class Erika Williams, 30th Intelligence Squadron imagery analyst and JBLE Tax Center volunteer. "The customers are so appreciative of what we do for them."

The Tax Center hours of operation are 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., weekdays through April 18. An appointment is required. The Langley center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley AFB, Va. 23665.
