JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
Do you know the rules and regulations for operating a motorcycle? Do you want to learn to ride a motorcycle?
The 633d Air Base Wing Safety Office is offering motorcycle safety courses beginning March 15 for the upcoming riding season.
The classes are open to all active-duty military, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and family members. However, space is limited in all classes -- only 12 registered students per class with priority for active-duty military and DOD civilians. Retirees and family members will be listed as stand-by only.
The courses run through September. To register for a course through the Army IMCOM Driver Training Registration System, visit https://airs.lmi.org. Complete all required information; under Special Instructions list any additional information.
Courses are held at the 633 ABW Ground Safety Office, 2794 Harrison Loop on Fort Eustis.
The following provides important information regarding operating a motorcycle.
Requirements for motorcycle operations apply to:
- Active-duty military on or off any DOD installation
- DOD civilians when the motorcycle is operated on a DOD installation and off the installation if the individual is in a duty status.
- All others when the motorcycle is operated on the installation.
Requirements:
- Must be properly licensed to operate a motorcycle in Virginia or the active-duty member's home of record. Requirements vary state to state. Contact the Provost Marshal Office or the 633 ABW Safety Offices to determine requirements for your home of record (military only). Personnel licensed in Virginia must have a valid driver's license with a Class "M" endorsement.
The following clothing and personal protective equipment must be worn at all times when operating a motorcycle:
- Department of Transportation-certified motorcycle helmet (Snell is a civilian certification that meets/exceeds DOT certification).
- Full-fingered gloves designed for motorcycle operation.
- Long-sleeved upper garment
- Long pants
- Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots with a heel
- Eye protection -- goggles, shatter resistance glasses or helmet face shield. Fairing windshield does not meet requirement
- Daylight operation -- Brightly covered upper garment or reflective material (vest) worn over all other garments. May be worn over military uniforms while operating motorcycle.
- Night operation -- Reflective material (vest) worn over all other garments. May be worn over military uniforms while operating motorcycle.
Several motorcycle courses will be offered at Fort Eustis:
Motorcycle Safety Course
Required for all motorcycle operators. This is a one-time requirement. Either the Basic (Beginner) Motorcycle Course or the experienced Motorcycle Course meets the requirement. Passing the Department of Motor Vehicles licensing requirements for issuance of a motorcycle endorsement (written test and road skills evaluation) does not meet this requirement.

Everyone should begin with the basics. If you want to purchase a motorcycle but do not know how to ride, this is the course for you. This is a two-day (three-day during summer months) beginner's course that teaches you to ride; motorcycle and helmet provided.
