LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
An engineer from the 633d Civil Engineer Squadron won the Ninth Air Force 2010 Outstanding Performer of the Year award at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center in Valdosta Ga., March 10.
Todd Barnes, 633 CES Operations Flight deputy chief, won the award for Category 2, which is for GS-7 and above employees.
"I think that Langley Air Force Base is very busy for the civil engineering squadron," said Mr. Barnes. "We have a fighter wing and intelligence gathering squadrons and we're a joint base, whereas, most bases only have one mission set."
Mr. Barnes is the artist of his flight, as he envisions the big picture and makes sure the funds, manpower and work is completed.
"I have a $10.5-million budget and am responsible for the maintenance and repair of the facilities, runways, roads, electrical and plumbing on Langley," he said. "We've had one of the coldest and hottest seasons on record as well as several snow storms and a couple of different storm surge events, when water flooded buildings.
During the 2009 Nor'easter Langley received more than $43 million in weather damage and on Dec. 27, 2010 received up to 18 inches of snow.
"It's humbling for me to be selected for this award," he said. "You're only as good as your team because I only represent what my folks are doing and my folks are doing great things. When you look at what's being accomplished, you aren't looking at Todd Barnes; you're looking at a great team."
