LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
A memorandum of understanding was signed June 7 by Col. Donald Kirkland, 633d Air Base Wing commander, and Dr. Linda Shifflette, the Hampton City Schools superintendent, partnering the base with local schools.
The MOU is part of the Adopt a School program, which will allow approximately 20 units to interact, mentor and tutor in more than 30 schools beginning in the 2011-2012 school and continuing thereafter.
"Airmen through their units will partner with specific schools in Hampton, as Langley is part of this community," said Colonel Kirkland. "I'm proud to be part of the Adopt a School program. Our Airmen are also proud, as they will build friendships, while improving the lives of the students."
With Langley's contingent to foster good will with the Hampton Roads community, military members attended the annual Communities Priority Workshop. The workshop, engaged students, parents, and civic organizations, to generate ideas and gain further understanding and ownership of the schools. From this meeting, the Adopt a School idea was brought to light and now it's coming to fruition.
"I can't wait for the Airmen to come into the schools, sit down with the students one-on-one, and help them with math and reading," said Doctor Shifflette. "This gives our students opportunities to bond with individuals who have unique life experiences and skills."
