LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. –
According to George Washington, the willingness with which young people are likely to serve in any war ... shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of earlier were treated and appreciated by their nation.
In remembrance of those lost in the Sept. 11 attack, Bob McDonnell, Virginian governor, and First Lady Maureen McDonnell created a program called Serving Our service member families, which focuses on serving and supporting active-duty, Guardsmen and Reservists.
The program's website, www.sos.virginia.gov, connects military members and their families with businesses, churches, civic and volunteer organizations, such as legal assistance, nutrition counseling, meal preparation, and adult day care.
"Virginia is home to more active-duty military and their families than any other state, and they deserve our support, especially during the months, or even years, they are without a dad or mom, or both," said McDonnell. "My SOS concept is built on the premise that we must encourage the citizens and businesses of the Commonwealth to step forward and assist those families."
