By Senior Airman Jason J. Brown 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Fort Eustis-based U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Unit 305 departed Norfolk Jan. 3 for a six-month deployment to the Middle East.

During the deployment, PSU 305 will provide seaward security at strategic port locations around the North Arabian Gulf ensuring the free flow of personnel, equipment and commerce in the region.

PSU 305 is an active-duty commissioned Coast Guard unit assigned to the commander of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area. When activated, the unit operates under the direction of Maritime Defense Zone Atlantic commander or a Department of Defense combatant commander.

The unit's mission is to provide port security in support of military or humanitarian operations worldwide. PSU 305 is required to be air-deployable within 96 hours after recall, and self-sustaining for one month, with the exception of potable water and fuel.

The unit, which was formally commissioned in August 1995, operates out of Fort Eustis' U.S. Army Transportation Center.
