FORT EUSTIS, Va. –
For more than 50 years, the Anderson Field House has been one of the most recognized athletic facilities at Fort Eustis. This historical fitness building's renovations will kick-off the first of three phases beginning Feb. 20.
The AFH has been used not only for athletic activities, special events, change-of-commands but also as a welcome center for thousands of deployed units. So after many years of service, Soldiers, military families and civilians will now have an opportunity to experience a new state-of-the-art facility.
The rear multipurpose rooms will close, and construction will start with converting these rooms into new racquetball courts. The northeast corner of the field house will close for construction on the hallway, and the movement of electric panels. Because of the lack of electrical power to the facility during this time, it will close for two days.
In addition, portions of the men's locker room will be closed due to the construction of the hallway. All closures will be announced.
"AFH is in much need of renovation and it could use a face-lift. During these repairs and upgrades we want to be mindful of the needs of our customers, and minimize the impact as much as possible," said Robin D. Mills, 733d Mission Support Group acting civil engineer director.
According to Mills, the AFH renovations will cost an estimated $3.6 million.
"The AFH is an older facility, especially the gym, and after 50 years this is the opportune time to improve the quality of life and service," said Mills.
Although this will be an inconvenience, there are alternative locations for other activities normally held at the AFH.
"Our mission is to make sure this transition as smooth as possible. During the renovation periods, we will move instructional classes, and fitness programs to the McClellan Fitness Center, or the Aquatics Center," said John Volkers, 733d Force Support Group Division director.
The second phase of construction will begin March 5. Renovations will be done to the lobby, bathrooms, utility rooms, break room, main entrance and issue room, closing these areas.
"The bulk of the construction will be done by the end of June. However, we encourage the Fort Eustis community to be very patient during these renovations. AFH by far is the most utilized gym, but McClellan Fitness Center is well equipped, and available for usage," Mills continued.
