Fort Eustis takes lead on Child Abuse Prevention Month

By Tetaun Moffett 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Annually during the month of April the nation observes Child Abuse Prevention Month. Weekly special events and observances are held to recognize how various communities can play their part in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families. Monday, at Fort Eustis children from the Pershing Child Development Center planted a pinwheel garden to being this year's observance. According to A.J. Brandt, Family Advocacy Outreach manager, The Family Advocacy Program works diligently each year to support the Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"Child Abuse Prevention Month brings awareness to the community regarding the prevention of child abuse through activities and programs. Each member of our community can play an important role in the life of a child by reporting any suspected child abuse &/or neglect to keep our children safe," said Brandt.

Promoting prevention is the best hope for reducing child abuse and neglect and improving the lives of children and families.

"I faithfully try to provide my time and support during this month. It is very important that we all get involved, "said Judith Talbot, a family member. "Everyday life brings about stress of the economy, jobs and deployed spouses but child abuse should never be tolerated. Children are a gift and as a family it's our duty to protect them from being abused or mistreated."

Strengthening families and preventing child abuse requires a shared commitment of individuals and organizations in every community.

As the kick-off continued children from various CDC classes danced and paraded around the parking lot while they enjoyed myriad of music selections from the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band.

In addition, April 13, 9:30 a.m. at the CDC on Madison, Fort Eustis Soldiers will be reading a Dr. Seuss story to selected classes. For more information on upcoming events and programs for the month, contact the Family Advocacy Program at 878-0805.
