Langley Visitor Center moves to West Gate

By 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The West Gate Large Vehicle Inspection Station is scheduled to open Monday, May 7, at Langley Air Force Base.

All vehicle inspections will transition from LaSalle Gate to the West Gate LVIS May 7. Due to this change, the Visitor Center will be temporarily moving to the West Gate, off Armistead Avenue, on the same day. Drivers should expect new signs directing all truck traffic and visitors to the West Gate.

Additionally, the LaSalle Gate will close for six months, beginning Aug. 13, as the second phase of this project. This will include construction of a new visitor center/pass and ID facility and new guard house. The City of Hampton will be paving 900 feet of roadway from outside the LaSalle Gate up to the intersection at Tide Mill Lane May 14-16. This may cause delays for incoming and outgoing traffic through the LaSalle Gate during these three days as traffic will be down to one lane.

Upon completion of this phase, the LaSalle Gate and new Visitor Center will reopen; the estimated completion date is spring 2013. The temporary Visitor Center at the West Gate will go away at that time.

Project signs will be installed by the Virginia Department of Transportation on I-64, by the City of Hampton on local
roads and by LAFB on base.

--- I-64 - Northbound/Southbound will direct truck traffic to NASA/Magruder Blvd exit.
--- North LaSalle Avenue - Diverts truck traffic to Mercury then North Armistead permanently.
--- North LaSalle Avenue - Diverts all traffic to Mercury then North Armistead during LaSalle closure.
--- West Gate temporary Visitor Center signage will be easily visible.
--- LAFB - All 3 gates will advertise LaSalle Gate closure prior to Aug. 13.
--- 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron is still coordinating with VDOT to install the signage on I-64.
