Fort Eustis Commissary takes home top honor in grocery merchandising

The Fort Eustis Commissary earned the Best Large Store in the Grocery Merchandising category during the Defense Commissary Agency's Annual Merchandising Awards ceremony at DeCA's headquarters at Fort Lee, Va., May 3.

The 17th Annual Grocery Merchandising Contest focused on a "Back to School" theme. Nominees were judged on compliance with promotional packages, participation in the summer club pack program, support of the Halloween seasonal package, quality and creativity of displays, expression of promotional themes, and effective use of point-of-sale materials.

"The amazing creativity and enthusiasm exhibited by commissary employees and industry partner's help keep commissary customers aware of promotional discounts available to them," said Nadine Johnson, Ft. Eustis Commissary store director. "We love to create customer 'buzz' and excitement with these innovative displays. That helps spread the word about the featured products so customers get the most from their commissary benefit."

Each year, the Best Merchandising Awards recognize the commissaries' best displays. Winning displays are based on excellence in implementing the sales directorate's promotional program packages with creativity and excitement in merchandising products, and are listed by category, store size and location.

"Many promotional displays represent such creative works of art that the customer can't miss them, and sometimes we get letters saying how they can't forget them," said DeCA director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu. "Impressions like that take a lot of teamwork between our employees and our industry partners. The end result is another opportunity we have to deliver an effective and efficient benefit to our customers."
