JBLE closes outdoor pools

By Staff Sgt. Jarad A. Denton 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Due to budgetary reasons, officials at both Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis, Va. have decided not to open the outdoor pools at their respective locations.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis has curtailed non-mission essential flying, delayed purchasing non-essential equipment and limited office travel, in addition to closing the outdoor pools.

Both installations offer indoor aquatic centers for use by individuals with base access. Langley's Shellbank Fitness Center hosts an indoor pool for lap and exercise purposes, while Fort Eustis has an indoor aquatic center, featuring a pool, "Adventure Pool" area and lap lanes, as well as another indoor pool at the Anderson Field House. Fort Eustis also boasts a splash park in the housing area that will remain open to military families living in the Balfour Beatty Community. Hunt Military Family Housing, formerly Bethel Housing, will also be featuring a community pool for residents to use this season.

Additionally, military families can visit the JBLE Information, Tickets and Tours office to receive discounted tickets to area water parks and other events and attractions. For more information on these options, contact the ITT office at (757) 764-7176 for Langley and (757) 878-3694 for Fort Eustis. Interested individuals can also visit the JBLE Force Support website and search for the ITT offices under the Recreation & Leisure section of both installations: http://www.jbleforcesupport.com/.

For those JBLE families looking to explore other summer aquatic options, the local area has several places open to the public. The city of Hampton has both the Old Hampton Community Center Pool and the Hampton Aquatics Center ready to provide hours of enjoyment. In Newport News the Brittingham-Midtown Aquatics Center and the Doris Miller Community Center have facilities ready for children and adults to use. JBLE families in the Poquoson area can visit the Poquoson Municipal Pool to take a break from the summer heat.
