The 633rd Force Support Squadron hosted the third annual Alpha Warrior Regional Championship at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, June 15, 2019.

Competitors from JBLE, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina; Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey; Joint Base Andrews, Maryland and Dover AFB, Delaware; were registered for the competition.

“This is the North East regional competition,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. James Tarone, 633rd FSS Air Combat Command Gym assistant manager. “Along with the other bases, it is a great opportunity to get our top athletes and Air Force-wide top athletes to compete.”

The top male competitor was 1st Lt. John Novotny, 423rd Mobility Training Squadron deputy flight commander air advisor at JBMDL.

The top female competitor was 1st Lt. Nicole Mitchell, 83rd Network Operations Squadron assistant and director of operations at JBLE.

“It’s great to be back here for the third year in a row,” Mitchell said. “There’s always good competitors. I’m happy to win, I always challenge myself to do better than I did last time, and doing it with people who are also enthusiasts in Alpha Warrior is awesome.”

Family and friends cheered on the athletes as they completed the course which included; broken bars, core hammer power slam, battle rope double wave, devil ladder, rope climb.

“It’s an opportunity for the whole community to come out here and watch our best athletes,” Tarone said.

Tarone explained how the Air Force Alpha Warrior program is designed to enhance and challenge the four domains of the Comprehensive Airman Fitness (CAF), physical, mental, spiritual and social and that conquering the Alpha Warrior Battle Rig has the potential to challenge even the fittest of individuals by challenging the physical and mental strengths that help us become more resilient Airmen and better prepared to be fit to fight.

Tarone also explained how Alpha Warrior is an opportunity for friendly competition and building camaraderie with fellow competitors.

“I would just say go out and try it, you’re only going against yourself,” Mitchell said. “Practice makes perfect and that’s all anyone can ever do.”

The finalists will next compete in the Super Regionals in Charleston, South Carolina in July, 2019.
